The Human Rights Commission was given permission yesterday to intervene in a legal action brought by a cousin of the Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams.

Mr David Adams (40) is seeking a judicial review of a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions not to prosecute RUC officers he says beat him up.

Last year, Mr Adams was awarded £30,000 damages against the RUC for injuries he received after he was arrested when police foiled an IRA murder attempt on a senior officer in 1994. He was later sentenced to 25 years for conspiracy to murder.

The hearing is due to take place on March 6th.
