It's not so much your conventional musical; more a kind of theme revue with a delightful difference. Creatures, written by Alex Bonstein and Lee Maddeford, has only five performers, but they create what seems to be a legion of characters borrowed from your average horror film - except that they're not.
A few of them illustrate the divergence. Death has a problem, musically expressed as What's going to happen to me?; think about it. There is a vampire who sucks - yes? - and a werewolf on the verge of good happenings is returned howling to his human form. God, a raucous woman, has a wimpy angel in tow who gets it rough. The devil finds that men are going to hell these days without his help. These monsters would be pitiful if they weren't so funny.
It opens with Nightmare, sung soulfully by French artiste Liza Michael; and if you are uncertain about what constitutes star quality, go see her. God belts it out with Oh God, it's good to be God. The unfortunate Pianist is made of many body parts; a role taken by Patrick Laviosa, also the musical director. A libidinous Witch (Danna Davis) has an affair with the devil (Alex Bonstein) and later with the werewolf (ditto). The numbers tumble over each other, some soulful (the delectable Ms Michael), others toe-tapping, solo and choral. John Matthews as angel/vampire completes the talented quintet.
If it finally stops rather than ends, that is the nature of this - creature? It offers an evening of fun that is tuneful, pacey and highly original; winner all right.
