A retired couple who were on the first day of a trip around the world in their catamaran had to be rescued yesterday 25 miles off Arklow.

Having spent the last five years working on the catamaran, they had set sail from Preston and were heading down the Irish Sea when Mr Bryant Pound sustained broken ribs after being struck by the boat's main boom shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday.

A British frigate, the Monmouth, an Air Corps helicopter and the Arklow lifeboat joined in the rescue. Mr Pound was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.
