Civil Defence, fire and boat rescue crews today prepared for a major flood by simulating evacuation procedures and rescue efforts.
The massive operation in Fingal, north Dublin, also involved ambulance crews, the Coast Guard and around 100 officers in total.
Organisers said the five-hour long scenario-training exercise was a success.
They claim it is vital to keep volunteer crews fully up-to-date with techniques and training and to improve or adapt procedures used in the event of a real flood.
The Broadmeadow Estuary was the centre point of the operation as the water was the right depth to simulate a flood.
An accommodation centre was established in Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre and 50 newly-recruited Civil Defence volunteers acted as distressed civilians.
Rescue drills of this scale usually take place once a year. Civil Defence volunteer crews attended a raft of events this week.
The Malahide (boat) rescue crews were at the Liffey Rowing Race on Thursday, while fire, rescue and casualty crews attended the Sporting Fingal League of Ireland match against Shelbourne at Santry on Friday.
Two full boat rescue crews and one ambulance went to the Trinity Regatta at Islandbridge yesterday.
