Mr Copeland's solicitor, Mr Philip Breen, told magistrate Mr John Clery that several newspaper and television reports identified his client ahead of today's hearing.

The solicitor expressed concern that Mr Copeland's "name and details were on television" after 6 p.m. last night.

"Every newspaper and television programme after that named him," Mr Breen said.

He said in his experience reporters had certain responsibilities and he described the release of his client's details as "disgraceful".

Mr Clery agreed that the release of the details was "most unfortunate". Mr Breen confirmed his client would be denying the charges and would be applying for bail in due course.
