The death has taken place in Limerick of Mr Noel Smith (64), one of the best known journalists in Munster. He died after a short illness.

Mr Smith retired in November 2000 after serving for 40 years as regional correspondent for Independent Newspapers during which time he reported on major stories in Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Kerry.

Before that he worked for the Clare Champion, after beginning his career in the Munster Tribune, Clonmel, Co Tipperary.

His first novel, The Cry of the Kittiwake, was published three years ago and shortly before his death he finished a book of short stories which was due to be published in November.

Born in Killaloe, Co Clare, he was educated in Thurles.

He is survived by his brothers, Mr Gus Smith and Mr Brendan Smith, and his sister Mrs Patrick Collier.
