The Law Reform Commission has recommended the establishment of a process to allow appeals against sentences handed down by District Courts.

The commission has suggested the move as a response to the perceived leniency of some sentences handed down by District Court judges.

In a paper to be published today, the commission will suggest a "filter system" that would allow the public to appeal lenient sentences, subject to the approval of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
