The loyalist Red Hand Defenders group has said it was responsible for the pipe bomb attack on a prison officer's house in Belfast last night.

The Red Hand Defenders is a name of convenience used in the past by the UDA and the LVF.

The attack left the man's wife and four-year-old girl needing hospital treatment for cuts and shock.

The pipe bomb was thrown through the living room window of the house in Westway Park, on the northern outskirts of the city in the Ballygomartin area last night.

Police were today trying to trace the movements of a Vauxhall car, which was seen in the area moments before the attack. Detectives said the car contained three or four men.

The attack was condemned by the Prison Officers' Federation chairman Mr Finlay Spratt, who described it as "totally unacceptable".

"There must be somebody out there who knows who has carried out this attack and they must be stopped," he said.
