The Irish Red Cross has started accepting applications from people in need of financial assistance as a consequence of the recent flooding in the south and west of the country.

The Red Cross said applicants would not be subjected to a mean tested but an assessment process would be carried out.

The charity, which expects to raise €1 million in aid for flood victims, said payments from the fund will be considered independently of any compensation or assistance people might get.
