European champions Real Madrid of Spain added to their already brimming trophy cabinet by beating UEFA Cup Champions Feyenoord 3-1 to win the European Super Cup in Monaco tonight.
The tie was always going to be an entertaining fixture, and after just 15 minutes an rampant Real Madrid took the lead.
An own goal from Patrick Paauwe and first and second half strikes from Carlos and Guti respectively gave the Spaniards a relatively straight froward victory.
Real Madrid, who on Friday failed to land Brazilian forward Ronaldo from Inter Milan, pressed forward for most of the match, playing high in the Feyenoord area and dominating the Dutch side with impressive passing.
French international Zinedine Zidane, who on Thursday was voted European club football's top player for last season, was in his element displaying an array of technical tricks to show he is more than ready for Real’s first domestic encounter against Espanyol this weekend.
The first goal of the game, following a series of precise passes, came courtesy of Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos who fired a vicious pass into the area only for Paauwe to deflect the ball into his own net.
Six minutes later Carlos took a more direct role, picking up the ball after a series of backflicks and firing home a right-foot shot to dupe the Dutch defence.
After the interval Feyenoord upped the tempo, and created a few chances before Pierre Van Hooijdonk fired home a superb freekick with his right foot in the 56th minute.
But four minutes later Real were in front again, Spanish international Jose Maria Gutierrez directing home a header from a cross by Portuguese international Figo to secure yet another trophy for the Spanish giants.
