KIEV - Ukraine yesterday vowed to close one of two working reactors at Chernobyl next month, sticking to a timetable agreed with Western donors to shut down the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster by the year 2000.
"On November 30th reactor No 1 will be stopped completely," the Environment and Nuclear Safety Minister, Mr Yuri Kostenko, said, and scientists "will investigate the condition of the reactor and the best way to get the fuel out".
