RAIDERS DROVE a stolen 4x4 vehicle into a Co Wexford supermarket yesterday and repeatedly rammed an ATM in an attempted robbery.

Gardaí are investigating the raid on the O'Reilly Supervalu store in Bunclody early yesterday morning. The Isuzu Trooper vehicle, stolen from outside a house in the town earlier the same night, caused extensive damage to the supermarket.

Three intruders wearing balaclavas drove the 4x4 through the steel pillars and glass porch to the front of the shop and through its interior steel shutters at about 5.15am. They smashed through the fruit and vegetables aisle before reversing into the ATM. The machine is believed to have been rammed up to 10 times but failed to break away.

At least four raiders were involved in the raid, three in the 4x4 and a fourth who drove a getaway car which was shown on CCTV footage leaving the scene in the Carlow direction. The gang abandoned the 4x4 at the scene.Thousands of euro worth of damage was caused to the shop, which has been trading for six months.

In a separate incident in Bunclody on the same night, raiders broke through the roof of the Furniture Concepts store and stole cash. On Tuesday up to 80 mobile phones worth €17,000 were stolen from the MPRS shop at Market Square in the town.
