Nearly 50 years after the classic movie, The Quiet Man, was shot around Cong, Co Mayo, a comedy film is to be made around the background of the epic motion picture.

The £6.9 million movie, Connemara Days, is expected to be filmed next spring. Its script has a local girl falling in love with an assistant director of the Quiet Man.

The starring role will be played by former Beverly Hills 90210 superstar Luke Perry, playing the part of an assistant to the director of the Quiet Man, John Ford.

Others billed to take part include Rosaleen Linehan, Australian Bryan Browne, American Jason Robards and Sir Norman Wisdom.

Producer Gareth Owen said the story is set in 1951 in the village of Cong, when Hollywood descended.

"It's a comedy about on the local village girls falling in love with the assistant director, a young man who idolises John Wayne.

The role of the village girl who falls for Perry's character will go to a prominent Irish actress who has yet to be named.

A London group, Sarah Radcliff Productions, will make the film, with the assistance of a grant from the Irish Film Board.
