THERE was strong criticism at a meeting of the Border Regional Authority in Monaghan yesterday of what were described as "quango groups" set up on a voluntary basis to obtain EU funds for projects.

The chairman of the authority, a Louth councillor, Mr Peter Savage, told the delegates it was time they took action to highlight "this erosion of the powers of democratically elected representatives."

The authority decided to convene a joint meeting with its western counterpart, the Western Regional Authority, to which the European Affairs Minister, Mr Gay Mitchell, is to be invited for a full debate on European funding in the two regions after
