Delhi - The Indian state of Punjab yesterday asked Britain to return the Koh-i-noor diamond, a key part of the Crown Jewels. Punjab chief minister Mr Prakash Singh Badal said he had asked the Prime Minister, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, to negotiate the return of the diamond, the name of which translates as "Mountain of Light".

The Koh-i-noor was acquired by Queen Victoria following a 19th-century peace treaty. - (AFP)
