Several PSNI officers were injured last night after trouble flared following a football match at Windsor Park in Belfast.

Several PSNI officers were injured last night after trouble flared following a football match at Windsor Park in Belfast.

A crowd of around 300 supporters attacked police on the Boucher Road near the ground after the CIS Cup final between Cliftonville and Glentoran. Rioters threw bottles, stones and other missiles hitting several officers.

Several officers were injured and a number of cars were damaged in the attack. The supporters also attempted to hijack a lorry but were foiled.

Around 7,000 supporters attended the game where there were no reported incidents.

Glentoran won the match 1-0.

Irish Football Association president Jim Boyce lambasted the hooligans, describing them as "morons".

Mr Boyce, a former Cliftonville chairman, said: "Inside the ground the atmosphere was tremendous and both sets of supporters behaved immaculately," he said. PA
