Police in Belfast were today trying to establish the circumstances of the death of a Chinese man who was found in an alleyway with severe head injuries.

The man was found near the Backpackers Hostel in the Donegall Road at around 5.10pm yesterday.

An ambulance took the injured man to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A police spokeswoman said the dead man was 24 and had checked in to the hostel on Thursday.

It had been established that he visited an off-license in Bradbury Place at around 11.30am yesterday. He returned to the Backpackers' Hostel at about 4pm.

His body was found in the alleyway 70 minutes later.

A post mortem examination would be carried out later today.

Detectives want anyone who had stayed at the hostel since last Thursday but who had not yet spoken to officers to contact police.
