PSNI discovers pipe bomb stash

Police have uncovered two pipe bombs stashed in woodland in Co Antrim.

Police have uncovered two pipe bombs stashed in woodland in Co Antrim.

Ammunition and fireworks were also among the discovery in Portglenone Forest.

The PSNI described the pipe bombs as viable and primed. They had been buried in the woods.

Detectives searched the scene last night after reports of suspicious activity in the area.

British army bomb experts were called in to make the devices safe, and the explosives have now been sent for forensic examination.

SDLP North Antrim MLA Declan O'Loan said the seizure reduced the potential for murder, mayhem and destruction in Northern Ireland.

"I believe that those responsible for these items are those associated with pipe bomb attacks on Gaelic grounds and a primary school in Ahoghill and Portglenone and related events in Carnlough and Larne," he said.

"This was a big police operation where extensive searches of the forest were carried out," he said.
