An Italian prosecutor today asked a court to sentence Mr Silvio Berlusconi to eight years in prison for allegedly bribing judges.

Mr Berlusconi has denied the charges and said he is the victim of a politically motivated campaign by left-wing magistrates in the four-year corruption trial.

He is accused of bribing judges to prevent the sale of state-owned food chain SME to a rival businessman in the 1980s, before he entered politics.
