In a letter to the president of the International Committee to the Red Cross, Mr Cornelio Sommaruga, Mrs Robinson expressed her "deep sadness and regret" at the killings.

She also sent wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in the attack. There are two Irish Red Cross workers in the region, Mr Bernard Markey from Meath and Mr Tom Daly from Limerick.
