An Post has said that the Co Waterford post office in Kilmacthomas, which was closed this morning following an anthrax scare, has reopened.

According to a spokesperson for An Post, the post office was closed at around 6.15 a.m. when the post-mistress noticed white powder leaking from an envelope.

Gardai and emergency services were alerted and the envelope was taken away.

There was some disruption to postal services in the area but, the spokersperson said, the powder was not considered to be dangerous and services returned to normal immediately.

"In all cases no matter how unlikely the situation may be, An Post must follow procedures in order to ensure the safety of its employees and the general public," the spokesperson said.
