London - The shadow chancellor, Mr Michael Portillo, yesterday said claims by his deputy that Tories hoped to cut tax by up to £20 billion in five years were wrong. Mr Oliver Letwin, the shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, last week admitted he was the source behind an article in the Financial Times which put tax cuts beyond the £8 billion promised in the Conservative manifesto.
