Striking Dublin Port cargo workers are to picket Dunnes Stores on Henry Street in the city centre today as part of their dispute with Marine Terminals Limited.

The 30 MTL workers, who are represented by Siptu, have been on strike for 90 days in a dispute over the alleged implementation of compulsory redundancies and changes to working pay and terms and conditions.

The company has asked the union to recognise that “for the port of Dublin to remain competitive in a deteriorating market, changes must be made”.

A spokesman for the workers, Joe Mooney, said they want Dunnes to stop using the services of MTL at the port and switch to another company.

“We will be calling on the general public to let it be known to Dunnes Stores that they are not happy with the store profiting from the actions of strikebreakers,” Mr Mooney said.

The workers have previously picketed the Dunnes Stores branch in the St Stephen’s Green shopping centre.

Siptu said some 600 people attended a rally in Dublin Port yesterday in support of the striking workers.
