Polluters who caused fish kills or damaged the water quality in our rivers and lakes would be pursued and made to face the full rigours of the law, the Minister of State for the Marine, Mr Eamon Gilmore, warned in the Seanad yesterday.

Every summer there was evidence of pollution resulting in fish kills, he said.

The Regional Fishery Boards had his full support in applying the full rigours of the water pollution and fisheries legislation in identifying and pursuing polluters.

The resources of the State would be used this summer to ensure that pollution of our waterways was kept to a minimum, said Mr Gilmore, who was speaking in the debate on the Dumping at Sea Bill, which passed all stages.
