ROME – Early projections yesterday from local elections showed prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance forced into a run-off vote in Italy’s business capital of Milan.

Projections based on 20 per cent of results by pollster Piepoli showed Milan’s centre-right mayor Letizia Moratti with 42.7 per cent support against 47.1 per cent for centre-left rival Giuliano Pisapia. Mr Berlusconi had campaigned frenetically for an outright win in his home town, which the centre right has easily held for 20 years. – (Reuters)
