Police in Coleraine are treating as attempted murder an assault on a 41-year-old man in the town yesterday morning.

The victim, who yesterday was stated to be in a critical but stable condition in the Causeway Hospital, sustained serious head injuries in the attack.

The incident took place at New Road close to Coleraine's main shopping precinct. The injured man managed to stagger into nearby Church Street where he was found lying in a doorway.

Local councillor John Dallat said pools of blood were found along the route taken by the victim.

"I know the victim and he is still in a critical condition in hospital. This type of incident is becoming more common in towns and anyone with information about this vicious assault should contact the police immediately", said Cllr Dallat.
