Pristina - Riot police baton-charged a protest march by around 3,000 Albanian students and arrested the rector of the "underground" university in Pristina yesterday. At least 10 people were injured when police fired tear gas and charged the marchers, who had announced their protest several days ago.

The demonstration was attacked despite a promise by the authorities to US and West European diplomats in Belgrade that no force would be used.

Student leaders are demanding access to Pristina university and for classes to be taught in Albanian instead of Serbian.
