London - A Church of England spokesman has dismissed a report that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, had made an appeal to the British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, to free the former Chilean dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet.

The Sunday Times said Dr Carey had made the appeal because he was concerned about the humanitarian aspects of keeping an old and apparently ailing man in detention. But a church spokesman, Mr Steve Jenkins, said: "The archbishop has not written to the Home Secretary about this".
