RESIDENTS of Drury Street in Dublin were yesterday celebrating a decision by councillors to reject plans to raise a Dublin city-centre car park by two storeys.

Corporation officials had insisted that adding the two extra storeys to Drury Street car park was necessary to pay for a major upgrading of the building. But councillors blocked the proposal at a meeting of Dublin Corporation on Monday night.

The car park was built in the early 1970s and, according to one corporation official, it was "doing nothing for the surrounding area" He said the intention had been to improve the facade, which was "very poor", and carry out internal improvements, including the addition of secure parking for cyclists.

However, residents submitted that raising the height of the car park would cause serious blockage of light, and their case was backed, by councillors. A corporation spokesman said this meant that the project was now "dead" and could not be resurrected in its present form.
