Robert Pires sent Arsenal top of the premier league tonight as his 69th minute goal gave the London club a precious 1-0 home win over battling Derby County.
The French midfielder produced a cool finish after a clever pass from Dennis Bergkamp just when Derby were thinking they might hold out for another good point following their 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord and Bergkamp all missed good chances for Arsenal who were on the attack for most of the game.
The single goal, however, was enough to take them to 60 points, two clear of United, who host Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow.
Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff scored a superb goal for Blackburn Rovers as they beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Ewood Park.
Blackburn, who are deep in the relegation battle, took the lead through a stunning David Dunn effort and led 1-0 at half-time.
Duff made it 2-0 in the 85th minute and former Manchester United star Andy Cole put the result beyond doubt a minute from time.
Duff’s international team-mate Jason McAteer was on the mark for Sunderland as Peter Reid’s side defeated Bolton 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.
