Lima - Peru went to the polls yesterday in a presidential runoff with opinion surveys showing Mr Alejandro Toledo, a free marketeer with populist rhetoric, narrowly ahead of leftist ex-President Alan Garcia.
Peruvians hope the election, the fourth in 14 months, will end more than a year of turmoil. US former secretary of state Madeleine Albright said she and her observer team found the elections to be proceeding "smoothly".
