A motorcyclist and a pedestrian died in separate road accidents overnight bring to 28 the number of people who have been killed on Irish roads so far this month.

A 23-year-old man was killed in a road accident at Whitestown Road in Rush in Co Dublin at 11.10 p.m.

A 29-year-old man died when he was knocked down by a lorry at traffic lights on Main Street in Monasterevin in Co Kildare at 10.40 p.m.

Last night Mr Aidan McFarland of 2 Fairview in Clones, Co Monaghan, died from injuries he sustained in a car accident on Friday.

Mr McFarland's car struck a wall at 4 p.m. on Friday. He was removed to Cavan General Hospital where he died yesterday at 10 p.m.

Fifty-nine people have died in road related accidents this year. In January, 31 people died and 28 people have died so far in February.

According to a garda spokeswoman these figure are comparative to road fatalities last year when 34 people on average were killed each month.
