A chartered passenger plane flying from the Czech republic to Kiev crashed near the Ukrainian capital today killing five people, Ukraine's emergency ministry told Interfax news agency.

The plane crashed near Kiev's second largest airport, Zhulyani, which is around 20 minutes drive from the centre of the city and is close to residential areas, the ministry said.

An information officer at Zhulyani airport would say only that a plane had crashed.

"The plane did not make it to the airport," she said. She gave no further details.

An emergency ministry spokesman confirmed the crash but would give no further details.
