A Palestinian student today appeared before magistrates in England charged with being a member of an organisation banned under terrorism legislation.

Adnan Abdelah, 21, was arrested on December 10 and charged four days later with membership of, or professing membership of Hamas which is a prescribed organisation within the (British) Terrorism Act 2000.

Mr Abdelah of Bavington Drive, Fenham, Newcastle upon Tyne, appeared before South East Northumberland magistrates at Bedlington, Northumberland, on December 21 and was remanded in custody until today's court appearance.

He is understood to be a drama student at North Tyneside College.

Mr Abdelah was remanded in custody again and the case was adjourned for one week.
