Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian bystander today as clashes raged in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian witnesses said.

The witnesses said Abdel-Qader Ibrahim Hamdan, 38, had been standing on a hilltop and watching the clashes when he was shot in the stomach.

"The bullet went through his stomach and came out of his back. He was not throwing stones," said one witness. He said the shots appeared to have been fired from a gun with a silencer attached.

The army said it was checking the report.

About 1,500 Palestinians had been demonstrating in Ramallah against the tightening of an Israeli blockade of the city, about 12 km (eight miles) from Jerusalem.
