London - Pakistan's military regime is committed to upholding the rule of the law and protecting human rights, but has still failed to outline a specific timeframe to restore a democratic civilian government, a ministerial mission of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) said yesterday, reports Rachel Donnelly.

After a two-day mission to Pakistan, a statement by the chairman of the mission, Canada's Foreign Minister, Mr Lloyd Axworthy, said it had encountered a "strongly felt desire for change" among ordinary people in Pakistan and no wish for another period of protracted military rule and pledged that the Commonwealth would "assist" in the process of restoring democracy.
