The commander of the Pakistan air force, Air Chief Marshal Mushaf Ali Mir, and 16 other people have been killed in a plane crash.

The state-run APP news agency quoted the military as saying that a Fokker-27 transport plane crashed 70 km (44 miles) west of the town of Kohat in northern Pakistan.

A military spokesman said all those aboard were killed.

A highly placed source, who did not want to be identified, said among those on board with Mir were his wife and two other air marshals.
