AIDS has claimed more than 21 million victims since the start of the global epidemic two decades ago. These are the latest regional figures from UNAIDS, the United Nations agency leading the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

By the end of this year, an estimated 36.1 million children and adults around the globe will be living with HIV/AIDS. More than five million new infections will have occurred during the year and three million people will have died from HIV/AIDS.

Sub-Saharan Africa - An estimated 25.3 million living with HIV/AIDS, 3.8 million new infections, 2.4 million deaths.

Western Europe - An estimated 540,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 30,000 new infections, 7,000 deaths.

North America - An estimated 920,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, with a projected total of 45,000 new infections and 20,000 deaths from HIV/AIDS during 2000.

Caribbean - An estimated 390,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 60,000 new infections and 32,000 deaths.

Latin America - An estimated 1.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS, 150,000 new infections, 50,000 deaths.

North Africa and Middle East - An estimated 400,000 living with HIV/AIDS, 80,000 new infections, 24,000 deaths.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia - An estimated 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 250,000 new infections, 14,000 deaths.

East Asia and Pacific - An estimated 640,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 130,000 new infections, 25,000 deaths.

South and South-east Asia - An estimated 5.8 million people living with HIV/AIDS, 780,000 new infections, 470,000 deaths.

Australia and New Zealand - An estimated 15,000 people living with HIV/AIDS, 500 new infections, fewer than 500 deaths.
