London - The cost of the British chip could soar if a potato shortage and spiralling prices for this year's rain-hit crop continue to take their toll.

The price of raw potatoes has more than doubled in recent months and shop owners are being forced to raise the price of a bag of chips. In two areas, a standard bag has now risen to more than £1.
