Two Garda Ombudsman inquiries were opened today into deaths on Co Galway roads in the past 24 hours.
The Ombudsman Commission is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a car in Co Galway overnight.
David Soloman (52) of Oughtherard but originally from Sunderland in the UK, was hit by a car driven by an off-duty garda at Glebe, Oughterard shortly before midnight.
The GSOC is also investigating the death of a man (36) who crashed his motorbike at Sralea, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, at around 11.45pm yesterday. He was later pronounced dead at Portiuncla Hospital.
It is understood he was attempting to evade gardaí when the crash occurred.
Both incidents were referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) by the Garda Commissioner under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.
The Act requires all deaths or serious injuries in which members of the force are personally involved to be referred to the ombudsman.
Another motorcyclist (34) was also killed yesterday when he crashed into a ditch at Tomriland, Roundwood, Co Wicklow. No one else was involved in the crash at 11.30am.
Seven people, including three pedestrians, died on Irish roads this weekend. A total of 199 people have died on the State's roads so far this year.
