The office of the Garda Ombudsman is investigating a crash in Limerick city centre late last night that left a 17-year-old youth in a critical condition in hospital.

The incident happened shortly after 11pm when a marked Garda patrol car was in pursuit of a green Honda Accord on O’Connell Avenue.

The Honda, which is believed to have been stolen, collided with another vehicle at the junction of O’Connell Avenue and Punches Cross.

The 17-year-old driver of the Honda was taken to Mid Western Regional hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The occupants of the second vehicle, a man and two women, were also taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for the Garda Ombudsman appealed for witnesses, saying the office is especially keen to talk to anyone in the vicinity of the O’Connell Avenue and Punches Cross and Wolfe Tone Street junctions at the time of the collision.
