Warsaw - Pope John Paul brought two of Poland's most vehement political enemies under the same roof yesterday. Both Gen Wojciech Jaru zelski, who imposed martial law in 1981 to try to crush the anti-Communist Solidarity move ment, and Mr Lech Walesa, the Solidarity leader imprisoned by Gen Jaruzelski, attended the Pope's address to parliament.
Meanwhile, Poland's Rabbi Menachem Joskowicz yesterday appealed to the Pope to remove a cross erected in the Pontiff's honour outside Auschwitz, reigniting a row over religious symbols at the Nazi German death camp.
