The Old Firm will meet with officials from the Scottish Premier League (SPL) this week to agree a possible play-off match, should one be required, to decide the Scottish League title.

Following results at the weekend - where Celtic won 4-1 at Dunfermline and Rangers needed a last minute penalty to secure a 2-2 draw with Dundee - the Glasgow rivals face the real possibility of finishing the league campaign all-square. They could finish level on points, goal difference and the same goals scored tally. That's also assuming Celtic win their game in hand to join Rangers at the top.

The obvious neutral venue, should the play-off be needed, would be the national Hampden Park but the problem of finding a suitable date still remains. The last SPL matches will be played on Sunday, May 25th with the Tennent's Scottish Cup Final taking place the following Saturday. Added to the congestion, Scotland is due to play Germany in a Euro 2004 qualifying match on June 7th.

Ian Blair, from the SPL, said he would prefer the league to be decided in normal time but just in case he has to make sure everyone knows the drill should we arrive at what would be a huge match.

"After the weekend's results it is possible we could have a play-off. This week we will have to speak with Celtic and Rangers and also people at Hampden to see which date would be the best should there be a play- off," Blair told the Scottish Daily Record.

"Obviously it is difficult because of the cup final the weekend after the final SPL matches. Then, the following Saturday we will all be watching Scotland in that very important qualifying match.

"We could look at the midweek between the cup final and the international game but the SPL have always tried to schedule matches to help the national team.

"We may, then, be looking at the next midweek, June 10th or 11th, which would be very late in the season.

"But we will talk to the clubs and also Hampden to work something out should we need a play-off, although I don't think it will come to that."

Rangers currently top the SPL on 88 points with three games left while Celtic have 85 points and four matches to play. Rangers' goal difference of plus 63 is three better than Celtics.
