O'Reilly (35), Lambay View, Baldarragh, The Naul, was convicted unanimously by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in July of the murder of his 30-year-old wife at their home on October 4th 2004. O'Reilly had denied murder.

He was jailed for life by Mr Justice Barry White.

His lawyers lodged paperwork with the courts in August indicating his intention to appeal against conviction and sentence.

O'Reilly claims his trial was unsatisfactory and his conviction is unsafe and his appeal was formally lodged with the Court of Criminal Appeal this week.

The 11 points on which he is appealing are believed to include arguments that evidence of mobile phone records relating to the location of his mobile phone on the date of his wife's murder should not have been permitted to go before the jury.

O'Reilly is also believed to be advancing several grounds relating to the nature of the trial judge's charge to the jury.

A date for the appeal hearing has yet to be set but it is unlikely to be heard before the new year.
