John O'Keefe has stepped down as Ireland coach in the wake of the International Rules series defeat, according to reports emanating from Melbourne this afternoon.

The former Austin Stacks and Kerry hero - who worked with Paidi O Se as a selector and physical trainer with the Kerry team - guided his side to a three point victory in Melbourne's second test earlier today but was unable to overhaul the 10-point deficit from the defeat in Perth.

O'Keefe, who succeeded Brian McEniff as Ireland coach, was also in charge last year when the Aussies claimed the series in Ireland.
