Nurses at Bantry hospital begin work-to-rule

Nurses at Bantry General Hospital have today begun a work-to-rule over staffing levels on night duty.

Nurses at Bantry General Hospital have today begun a work-to-rule over staffing levels on night duty.

The nurses overwhelmingly voted in favour of industrial action two weeks ago. They say the hospital is understaffed, particularly on night shifts.

Mr Michael Dineen, Irish Nurses Organisation (INO) industrial relations officer, said nursing care will not be compromised in any way and that by withdrawing from the non-nursing component of their duties, its members will have a more dedicated nursing input.

"The ultimate benefactors from any such action will be the patients as we are seeking to have appropriate staffing levels on night duty," he said.

Around 80 nurses are taking part in the work-to-rule.
