Northern Pakistan rocked by earthquake

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Pakistan today but there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries, the Seismological Department here said.

Tremors lasting several seconds were felt at 4.47 p.m. (11.47 a.m. Irish time) in the northern Pakistani cities of Peshawar, Chitral and Islamabad, the department said.

The epicenter of the quake was located 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Peshawar near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Reports from Dushanbe said the quake also shook parts of northern Afghanistan and neighbouring Tajikistan. AFP
