The EU lifted a ban on exports of Northern Ireland beef on Wednesday imposed last month following the discovery of a fault in Northern Ireland's computerised tracking system for cattle which guarantees the correct operation of Europe's certified herd programme. EC farm and food safety officials demanded tighter controls after the system failed to detect meat accidentally exported from a herd affected by mad cow disease.
