Nominations for Labour leadership open

The Labour Party leadership race begins in earnest today as nominations for the position open

The Labour Party leadership race begins in earnest today as nominations for the position open. The Party will allow two weeks for nominations to be received before putting the matter to a vote.

There are a number of possible candidates including deputy leader Mr Brendan Howlin as well as Dublin TDs Mr Pat Rabbitte and Mr Eamon Gilmore. However none have so far declared.

The contest arises out of Mr Ruairí Quinn's decision not to seek a second term in the position.
