Today's race meeting at Newcastle goes ahead after the track passed an early-morning inspection.

Although overnight temperatures dipped below zero, Gosforth Park was deemed raceable this morning, allowing clerk of the course James Armstrong to move forward his precautionary 8am inspection.

"There was a sharp drop in temperatures last night but it did not last long and never got into the ground," said Armstrong.

"But as temperatures are not expected to get much higher than three degrees today, it was just a case of sitting tight and making sure things did not get any colder this morning."

The going for the seven-race card, which begins at 12.40, is currently soft, heavy in places.
